Creating content using the DQC

The Drillster Question Crafter

Use the DQC as a source of inspiration for creating questions, answers and feedback for your target audience. Read about the settings below to help you get started.

The Content

Ready to create your drill? Then follow these steps on the Settings page.

1. Give your drill a title

Enter a short, descriptive title in the field "What is your drill about?". Make sure the title is no longer than 75 characters.

2. Upload yout content

Next, upload the document, image or video from which we need to create questions. Using our 10 Design Principles as a guide, the DQC analyses your file and puts together a relevant set of questions.

You can upload the following:
• Documents (.pdf, .txt)
• images (.png, .jpeg, .mpeg)
• Videos (.wmv,.mp4) - 500MB maximum

Pro-tip: To get specific questions, you can highlight or shade the most important parts of your content before uploading it.

3. Give additional information (optional)

In the field "Additional instructies" you can specify key focus points or learning elements that our AI can use (maximum 150 characters)
To instruct the system to turn all the information into a learning element, you can type ‘Exhaustive Mode’ into the instruction bar. The Question Crafter assumes that all information is important and makes no distinction between ‘Need-to-know’ and ‘Nice-to-know’.

Cognitive and Language Level

Choose the level of thinking that matches your learning objective. This determines how thoroughly learners need to understand the material. It is about the depth of thinking, not the subject matter itself.

1. Recall → name, list, repeat, define
2. Understand → explain, summarise, interpret
3. Apply → apply, carry out, solve, demonstrate FAQ 2.png

Select the appropriate language level;

• Level A1: Basic (Beginner) At this level, a person can understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and basic sentences.
• Level A2: Basic (Elementary) At this level, a person can understand sentences and common expressions relating to matters of immediate relevance (e.g. family, shopping, work).

• Level B1: Independent (Threshold level) Understands the main points of clear texts on familiar topics.
• Level B2: Independent (Advanced level) Fluent in spoken and written language on a wide range of topics.

• Level C1: Proficient (Effective) Can recognise the implicit message in complex texts.
• Level C2: Proficient (Expert) The highest level, comparable to that of a native speaker.

Learning Element

Consider point two of our 10 Drill Design Principles; ‘Limit your drills to crucial need-to-know information’. So you can tick off any irrelevant learning elements; this prevents distractions from the core material.

For an effective drill, we recommend at least five learning elements. If the desired elements are missing, you can add them manually yourself.

Question Settings

To enhance the learning experience and prevent learners from constantly being asked exactly the same question about a learning element, you can use ‘Equivalent Questions’ in the DQC. To do this, you create several similar questions that are linked to the same learning element.

In the Drillster editor, these questions can be recognised by the dotted lines surrounding the question. Visit our website Equivalent questions for more information.

Checking content

Check the questions that have been generated. If you are not satisfied with the questions, click on 'No, generate again'. If you are satisfied with the questions, click on 'Yes, keep'.

The generated drill consists of a combination of fill-in-the-blank and standard multiple-choice questions. Use these as inspiration to create questions or adapt them to other question types, such as hotspots, open-ended questions or sequencing questions. If you’d like to find out more about this, please visit our website Types of questions.

Don’t forget to add media to your content to make it more appealing . You can find details of the supported media formats on our website Media settings.

DQC extra functionalities

With the DQC licence, you get more than just the question generator. You can generate images for icons and/or covers for your drills. The DQC also allows you to translate your drills into one of the 18 supported languages in just a few minutes.
